Surfing was first documented in Hawaii by the crew of Captain James Cook on the ship HMS Endeavor in 1769. It was a sport of nobility in the Polynesian culture and the Europeans who witnessed this water sport noted that the ‘natives’ were using planks of wood and single hull canoes to propel themselves down the face of the wave.
In the islands surfing is a recognized high school sporting activity much like baseball and football. There are tourneys all over the islands and many of the kids are employed by large companies to represent their product lines of surfboards, and beach apparel.
