The evolution of the Kauai vacation rental industry in the past twenty years has been remarkable. From a fledgling rental start up prior to 1994 to a mature vacation accommodation industry today. It’s rise in popularity is due to the many choices that are offered that can not be found in traditional hotels. In fact, a recent Trip Advisor survey reported that 42% of all respondents believed that a vacation rental offered more amenities than a traditional hotel.
Our Kauai vacation rental beginnings were prompted by an unlikely source, the General Manager of the Grand Hyatt Kauai. Following the mandatory remodel forced upon us by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, we rented the Suites to the Hyatt Corporation for three years. The General Managers that rented our home gave us insight into the hospitality industry offering suggestions that have made our Suites a destination in Kauai rentals.
We recognized along with others in the Kauai real estate world that the needs of a segment of the visitor industry were not being met. The visitor that sought value at a lower price point to the 4 and 5 star resorts, where they had choices that were in line with what they wanted in a holiday stay. This has been our philosophy for the past 15 years, offer quality amenities that fit the needs of our guests, and meeting their expectations. It has proved correct, we are consistently ranked in the Boutique accommodation category for Poipu Beach with Trip Advisor, the leading hospitality site on the web.
Here are some of the frequently requested amenities that guests ask for in a Kauai vacation rental:
The same Trip Advisor surveyed found that the number one amenity that travelers wanted was a kitchen. The flexibility that a kitchen offers to a visitor is two fold. The ease of making meals ‘in house’ where you can meet your own dietary requirements is important to a health conscious traveler, guests are looking for alternatives to high caloric restaurant fare. It’s also a great opportunity to shop the local markets, sample the culinary treasures of the tropics and to learn new recipes from the vendors. Secondly are vacation budget constraints. Meals can be eaten at home at a fraction of the cost of a local restaurant. Our casual survey of guests at Turtle Cove Suites suggests that guests eat two of their three meals in our Suites.
A full 22% of the respondents in the same TA survey listed WiFi as the single most important factor in renting a vacation property. We understand at TCS that staying connected is a fact of our work lives and being in touch with the office will ease the transition back into the ‘daily grind’ when you return. The ability to up load photos and video of your honeymoon vacation at TCS is important to you and loved ones. The electronics amenities do not stop with WiFi, we offer flat panel TV’s and iPod docking stations along with DVD players at the ready.
Bath Products: In our vacation rentals we use bath products with pure essential oils. Luxury bath products by local aromatherapy specialists Maile Products that are born and bred here on Kauai. Feel the difference and relish the pampering of the pure essential oils in these tropical blends formulated right here on Kauai. It is this attention to detail that helps make for the best romantic vacation.
Swimming pool: We have observed over the years that guests who stay at least 7 nights with us have the time see the vistas of this great island and then can spend time just relaxing by the pool overlooking the ocean.
Private Jacuzzi: Located in our Ocean and Mana Suites have been popular additions and a welcome opportunity to ease sore muscles from a long hike on the many trails of Kauai. Our hydrotherapy deep soak tubs were chosen because of their time tested pursuit of quality known worldwide in the Jacuzzi brand.
Practical But Necessary Amenities
View: Travelers to Kauai have come for the natural beauty, they want a view, it’s important. We have the ocean only feet away from the property and dynamic views of the Waikomo Stream surrounding you in the sounds of water throughout the Suites.
Lanai: Ten percent respondents in the survey indicated that a top tropical amenity was a lanai. Lanais offer outdoor living at its best enabling guests to enjoy a cool drink, views and those gentle Kauai trade winds.
We have compiled a list of questions to ask when interviewing Kauai vacation rental owners:
* Does the Suite have a private BBQ gas grill on the lanai?
This should be clearly stated or photos posted.
* Is there late check out fee?
Ask early in the conversation. A great number of flights back to the mainland depart at 8pm or later from the Lihue Airport.
* Is there private off street parking?
Not many people like cruising around looking for a place to park once you have reached your destination. Ask, so there are no surprises.
* How far is the ocean and the beach from the house?
Everyone’s ideas of distance are different. What is ‘steps to the ocean’ maybe an uncomfortable hike for another.
How private is the property?
You don’t want to show up and find out that you’re in the middle of commercial activity. Find out where your neighbors are located.
What are your favorite amenities that a Kauai vacation rental should have. We at Turtle Cove Suites would love to hear from you.
