Finding A Great Vacation Rental In Kauai Hawaii

Finally, you have decided to take that long overdue romantic vacation to Kauai Hawaii. The decision was easy. Three consecutive years of ‘staycations’, visiting relatives in the next county to see your mother-in-law’s latest quilt, was just too much. Honestly, being confined to a home with more shades of pink than a Las Vegas night club, leaves you with a headache long after you’ve returned home. That is not a vacation my friends, that is work. As important as sleep, a vacation provides restorative qualities that renew and invigorate long after you have returned home.

A Kauai vacation rental may have exactly what you are looking for in your ideal romantic escape. Could it be that they have many of the amenities of a fine hotel with more space, or the allure of living like a local resident make this segment of the hospitality industry very appealing . Arguably, the value of vacation rentals maybe the single most factor in your choice of accommodations. Whatever the reasons, here are a few steps to find the perfect Hawaii vacation rental.

What’s Important – Know What You Want

There are a few basics that can be answered before you launch into the nearly 5.4 trillion URLs on the internet. These are more lifestyle choices for you and that special someone. List the amenities that are important to you. Will this be a relaxing 7 to 10 day trip or a whirlwind 3 days of “I must see everything”. Why is this an important question? It could mean the difference of finding a secluded romantic spot where the two of you can escape, with amenities such as a pool and a private jacuzzi that you can spend hours in. Or a rental that will be used for 8 hours per day just to sleep because you will be out exploring our great island. Is location to a beach high on the list, or is being close to a golf course more of your idea of a great holiday? Having those decisions answered will help narrow the list of vacation rentals.

Read The Fine Print

The large print giveth and the small print taketh away. Will the establishment have a BBQ grill for your cookouts by the ocean? Is there a maximum number of occupants permitted? Can we have a wedding ceremony on property? What is your cancellation policy? Don’t assume, have your questions prepared.

On Line Resources

The advent of opinion travel websites has made searching a great deal more convenient and reassuring. My favorites are Trip Advisor and Frommers. Trip Advisor is the first travel site on line and their nearly 50 million visitors a month is a statement to their integrity. Sites like Frommer’s, Fodor’s, and the New York Times travel site are excellent for their professionalism and they too have forums where past guests can post comments. As you read guest reviews be on the lookout for the owner or manager’s response. Responding to comments helps to evaluate the management and the property. How do they handle constructive criticism ? Are they defensive in their replies? Do they acknowledge shortcomings and offer solutions that will improve the experience for the next guest?

As the offerings of Kauai vacation rentals expand there are more choices than ever for the independent traveler. Start your search early, the best properties book quickly for a reason. Timely replies to your questions and phone calls shows a level of competence that may not be found in other Kauai rentals.

Does the property have on island staff to insure that when a problem arises there will be someone available at any time? Or does the owner live off island but operates the establishment to avoid management fees that can range from 20-50% of the rental rate? If so, the price may be right but the service may be non existent.

Before I end this post, here is another important question. Can you see yourself having a great time? If the photos make you want to leave immediately you have a great Kauai vacation rental.

Tell us about your vacation rental experience, and what are the most important amenities that you look for when deciding your next trip.

  1. Great advise to the Kauai traveler. If you love gardens stay in a garden if you have to hear the waves at night stay on the beach. Follow your passion… you will have a great vacation and do your homework it is not a good idea to assume anything! a great article Joe! Mahalo.

    • Thank you Jai for reading the article and making a comment. The amount of time it takes to read through webpages whether you are looking for a great rental or researching a new refrigerator is daunting. I know you probably get asked a lot of the same questions that you may have posted directly on your website like we do. Once frustrating, I have come to realize that the computer mouse has enabled us to view so much data in a short time that it becomes overwhelming, sensory overload comes far too quickly. I remind myself to live Aloha and treat each question as an opportunity to help someone make an informed decision about where to stay on Kauai.
