How do you cram as much of Kauai Hawaii in just a seven day stay? A popular game plan among the hardy is to split their stay between the North and the South sides of the island. They share a common philosophy, resting is something they can do when they return home. While not our cup of tea when traveling, here is our game plan for the four best things to do in Poipu and in the burning western side of this magical island.

Spend three nights on the North side of the island and four in the South shore. While you are staying here in Poipu Beach, all of these destinations are within an 1 hour drive of our Kauai vacation rentals. I will offer a schedule that will include time at the beach too. See, I am not a task master. However for the true Type A’s out there you may wish to do laps in the water and not just bake in the sand. It’s your call, I will let you decide.

Kalalau Valley from High Atop the Lookout in Kokee

Day 1: Visit Kokee and Polihale Beach

Depart for Kokee about 8 am, the traffic will be light and the ride pleasant. You can stop at Lappert’s in Kukuiula Village for a great cup of coffee as you leave Poipu behind for the day.

Take Waimea Canyon Drive at the west end of Waimea. Stop only at the first lookout as you cruise up the hill. This first stop is just a pull over but the view is great. Waimea town takes on the appearance of a small hamlet with the mocha brown river emptying into the ocean.

If you have the will power continue up the hill and avoid stopping at the other lookouts. You can see these stunning sections of the canyon on your descent from Kokee. It’s easier on the brakes of your rental car, trust me on this.

The first lookout is Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout, you will be able to see Waipo’o Falls especially after a rain storm. The next stop is just past mile 13, the Pu’u Hinahina Lookout offers stunning views of the Forbidden Isle of Niihau. Here you can catch great views of the canyon too!

Stop at the end of the road at the Kalalau lookout for photos and a stretch. Most people stop here and we suggest you do the same, but not right now, continue down the road to Pu’u o Kila Lookout. It’s less crowded and offers epic vistas of the Pacific and Kalallau Valley.

Don’t miss the opportunity to hike for an hour or two. Take the Pihea trail up at the top and enjoy a different perspective of the Kalalau Valley. Wear shoes that with good traction, the trail can be muddy. It’s well worth the drive. The air is crisp and you will be on the edge of the worlds highest elevation bog the Alalakai, incorrectly called a swamp.

Have lunch at the Kokee Lodge and tour the museum after your hike.Try counting all the chickens in the parking lot.

On you way down the hill bear to the right and take the Kokee road back down the hill. The road is less steep than Waimea Canyon Drive and it will offer great views of the Mana plains and the island of Niihau in the distance.

When you reach the highway with Kekaha Beach in plain view you can swim here at this life guarded beach and then continue down the road to Polihale. You will leave the comfort of the paved highway for the old crush coral sugar plantation roads to get to this beach. It is well worth the dust and the jolts to your carss suspension system. With the beach running right into towering cliffs it is beautiful.

There are no lifeguards here and it can be a dangerous place to swim so just enjoy the view. There are picnic tables and small pavilions for a relaxing lunch or rest. Shower and bathroom facilities are located here.

Cruising the Napali Coast

Day 2: Cruise the Napali Coast

From the soaring cliff faces to the equally beautiful sea life, the Napali coast of Kauai has it all. Depart from Port Allen for a 3 or 5 hour cruise. I recommend the 5 hour cruise, simply because you will see more of the fabulous coastline. With ocean conditions playing an important factor, most of the tour companies will take you all the way to the Hanalei side of the Napali.

I have had the opportunity to cruise with all the commercial operators at Port Allen and all give a superb tour with knowledgeable staff and great food on board. I am partial to the five hour cruise. It offers the crew the flexibility to stop and observe a pod of dolphins or whales (in the winter season). Girls, bring a hat that can be tied because the sun and wind can be fierce.

Learn How To Surf at Poipu Beach

Day 3: Learn to Surf

Hey, you’re in Hawaii, the home of surfing. The ancient sport of Kings is quite accessible to us commoners. Kelly’s Surf School right under the blue tent at Poipu Beach is a good choice. Learn the basics of wave riding in an area of the beach that typically has 2-3 foot sets in the winter.

Overlooking the Beach at Allerton's Garden

Day 4: Visit The Gardens of NTBG

The Kauai Gardens of the NTBG are an ideal way to spend time in Poipu Beach. It can please a traveler on so many levels. If you have no experience growing plants it’s a stopover you will not want to miss. Exotic landscapes frame magical waterfalls and water features from renowned 20th century artists. Colorful plants from around the world will amaze and if you are perceptive you will swear that you have some of these plants and trees on the big screen.

For those of us that are interested in tropical plants and their impact on making our daily lives better, no matter where you reside. The Garden Staff are walking botanical encyclopedias that will share their knowledge of plants or some important biological factoid that enables certain plants to adapt the way they did. Interesting stuff.

Strolling Under the Jade Vine

You may not agree with my selections, hey, you’re right, you won’t get an argument from me. Trying to list the best things to see in Poipu and the West side of the island is difficult. Like trying to select the top five songs in the past year, you know you’re going to leave some great songs behind.

Remember, you only have 4 days on this side of the island. If you have the time, read some of our posts where we detail other great things to do in Kauai and you decide what are the best things to do in Kauai.

We welcome your comments or your +1′s on Google Plus, they are always appreciated.

One of the best things to do in Kauai is try your hand at kayaking on one of our serene and enchanting streams such as the Huilea in Hanalei or the Kapaa Stream. Another great choice is cruising the Wailua river as it turns and cuts back on itself, in a path carved by a millenia worth of rainfall.

Paddlers Rounding Makauena Point

For the more adventurous ocean canoe racing may be just the adrenaline rush required before tackling a few ginger martinis or beers later in the day. Ocean canoe racing is gaining in popularity around the world, it offers the participant the thrill of riding waves and the introspection required of a long distance runner.

Today the best ocean canoe paddlers in the world descended on the Garden Island for the 2012 Kauai World Challenge. The race began in Wailua and ended in Hanapepe at Salt Pond Park. This unique event for one man and two man teams pairs participants for stages in this long race. The changeover stages were at some of our most famous beaches such as Hanamaulu Beach Park, Kalapaki Bay, Poipu Beach and finally at Salt Pond.

Hugging the Coastline

Epically blue skies and seas greeted the paddlers with seas that were relatively calm and wave heights of 3-6 feet. With steady winds of 10-15 knots at their backs the winning team of Jimmy Austin and Danny Ching completed the course in about 3.5 hours.

Tony and His Partner Pushing Towards the Fourth Stage at Poipu Beach

The mixed winners were the Bartlett’s of Maui, Kai and his wife Laura are premier world class water people. In fact, many of the fastest canoes on the water are Kai Bartlett designs. Like Formula One cars, his creations are made of carbon fiber and weigh about 30 pounds. Feather like when you consider the canoe is 17 feet in length.

End of the Race at the Hanapepe Salt Pond

Of course if you do decide to try this sport when you are here on Kauai you won’t be renting one of Kai’s sleek designs but a more stable kayak that will be forgiving in the ocean. You will appreciate that because it will give you the chance to linger along some of the most dramatic coastline in the world.

You can rent kayaks from Outfitters Kauai, just a short walk from our Kauai vacation rentals It’s one of the best things to do on Kauai Hawaii.

Looking into the McBryde Gardens from the Research Center

If this will be your first visit, the Gardens are easy to reach from our Kauai vacation rental. Located on Lawai Road just a few yards before you reach Spouting Horn. The Visitor center offers a guided tour of Allerton Gardens which is the section of the valley closest to the Ocean. It includes a stately home, manicured gardens and majestic views of the iron red cliffs that frame the white sandy beach.

Waterfall in the McBryde Garden

Amidst all this beauty the buzz has been about the expansion plans for the McBryde Gardens, and they are ambitious. They will include tram lines, primary and secondary trails offering wide concrete paths that will take visitors into areas that before were difficult to access. Elevated stream walks, new bridges, and a proposed tunnel that will lead to bio-diversity plantings and to an area titled ‘Hawaiian Life’.

The Hawaiian Life area will show the visitor how the ancients lived off the land practicing what we now would recognize as enlightened land management. Harvesting staples like taro and yams and returning the unused organic matter back into the soil. Enriching the soil and insuring that the next harvest will provide for the needs of the village. Important agronomic fundamentals that the NTBG hopes you will take back and practiced in your backyard garden.

Bamboo Bridge Spans the Lawai Stream

It’s the vision of a great many people at the NTBG, from its 42 member board of directors, to the affable current director, Chipper Wichman. Wichman, a kama’aina with a multi generational connection to Kauai is an impassioned advocate for the land and the mission. Their goal is to teach and entertain non academics in the science of tropical plants.

With volunteers working side by side with leading botanists from around the world it is envisioned that staff can help bridge the esoteric discipline of academia and reveal its relevance to the visitor. Whether it is to help us understand why the race to save the last three known plants of a threatened tropical species from extinction is important. To why gradual almost imperceptible changes in climate have profound effects on habitat loss and population shifts.

Jade Vine Flowers Entangle a Monkey Pod Tree

The Gardens will also increase their collections of important food crops, such as tropical breadfruit. It is through their efforts to find and collect all known cultivars of this starchy staple that there will be a resource for plant breeders to work with in the event of a natural calamity that could threaten this species. Why is this work important? It is estimated that a billion people go to bed hungry, many from tropical climates.

A Reflective Spot in the McBryde Garden

The McBryde Garden can be appreciated on many levels. Unusual plants with their odd shapes and vibrant colors will astound the visitor with their beauty. The reasons why they adapted the way they did are as fascinating and complex as their aesthetic charm. A future Learning Center will assist in the dissemination of the latest information and a refreshment area will make it all more palatable.

When visiting the Gardens bring sunscreen, a hat, and mosquito repellant. It will make your time there so much more enjoyable.

Tell us your favorite spot in the McBryde Garden, it’s one of the best things to do in Kauai.

I love the opportunity to travel to an exotic getaway to experience new cultures. Experiencing Kauai means sampling new cuisine, savoring local brews, and sipping our own Koloa Rum. For me there is only one catch. How do you stay fit when the weather here demands ice cold local beer and Hawaiian taro chips? The answer is Island Gym and Fitness.

The Cardio Room

There is something almost redemptive about an hour workout. Yes, even while on vacation. It a license to eat drink and be merry, knowing that this is one part of my routine that I do not have to abandon while away from home. And when I am attacking that 5th beer, it’s a guilt free assault on that long neck. For those like minded guests at our vacation rental in Poipu that mecca of physicality is only 20 minutes away.

Island Gym in Hanapepe has been a part of the west side community for the past 10 years, it offers a great alternative to the only high priced gym in Poipu. They recently added an additional 2000 square feet that boasts 25 pieces of cardio equipment by manufacturers like Life Fitness and Precor.

Island Gym in Hanapepe

For weight trainers the sections of the Gym are well thought out, with areas sectioned for training specific areas of the body. With over 100 pieces of equipment there is never a line waiting for a free piece of equipment. For the old school types there are free weights in sizes from 2.5 pounds to 150 pounds.

Island Gym and Fitness is open every weekday from 5.30am till 9pm with slightly shorter hours on Saturday and Sunday, they can be reached at 808.335.2706. After an hour in here you will be able to tackle the biggest piece of Hula pie on the island.

Tell us about your favorite place to exercise while on holiday and there is no gym in site.

All week we had been expecting rain with a possibility of thunderstorms predicted for the state, perhaps throwing a wet rag on the upcoming commemorative ceremony for the 2012 Prince Kuhio Festival. Like an unwanted but expected guest, you rehearse encounters at their upcoming arrival and none of them are good.

Honoring Prince Jonah Kuhio

Perhaps it was self inflicted anxiety. After 31 years here I should know to treat the television weather reports with a degree of uncertainty. Reports tend to focus on the island of Oahu, and even though we are only 100 nautical miles from the island, Kauai weather can be quite fickle. With seven micro climates our weather conditions can be radically different only 5 miles away.

This proved to be the case, the morning broke and the south shore was flooded with glorious sunshine to embrace and honor the birth and accomplishments of Prince Kuhio who was born 141 years ago on a grassy hillside facing the ocean above what is now called Lawai road.

Women Entering the Prince Kuhio Celebration

Local kupuna or elders gathered in period costume from the Victorian era of the late 1800′s to earlier times when men and women wore the colorful ‘Ahuli’i, native red and gold cloaks or capes. In earlier times these were made of forest bird feathers gathered in the mountains.

It was encouraging to see a great number of local youth attending the celebration learning the stories, hearing the experiences of their elders, so that in time they will be the future torch bearers. And the caretakers of Prince Kuhio Park which through a transfer of title the present owner has donated an additional 16 acres to the current 5 acre park. Citing the historical significance of the area, representatives of Alexander and Baldwin Company recognized that they did not have the expertise to care for this special area.

Children Presenting a Lei Honoring Prince Kuhio

Prince Kuhio’s Legacy

An important figure in Hawaiian history and the last descendant of the King of Kauai, he is remembered as being the last person to have a direct line to the throne in the Kingdom. While his path to the Hawaiian monarchy was never to be fulfilled due to the overthrow of the Kingdom in 1893. He was jailed in 1895 for two years accused of trying to restore the Hawaiian monarchy.

He adapted and worked within the confines of the new and illegal government and was elected to the Congress as a Republican. He served ten consecutive terms from 1902 and was instrumental in establishing counties in the state each with its own local elected officials.

He spoke passionately in Congress about the plight of the Hawaiian people whose populations were decimated through the years by disease and disenfranchisement. It was estimated that prior to arrival of Europeans the native population was 90 % larger than in 1920. His fervor so affected President Harding that he signed legislation that created the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act in 1921 that set aside over 200,000 acres for native Hawaiians with a blood quantum of 50%.

Prince Kuhio understood that his people needed protection in the wake of a flood of industrialists who saw opportunity in these islands to be exploited. He believed that if his people lost connection to the ‘aina or land, the very soul of their identity would be lost.

For these and other accomplishments the community gathers each year to celebrate all that he has done to empower future generations of the Hawaiian community.

The news around the luau table has been the rumors that Southwest Airlines has purchased planes capable of reaching Hawaii. The unknown is when they will make the announcement that they will expand to the lucrative Hawaii market. While speculation runs amok, Alaska Airlines announced today an increase in service and a great deal to boot.

Romantic Anniversary Ideas: Kiss Under a Tree

Perhaps it was a strategic move by Alaska Airlines to increase service to take advantage of the lack in competition from the legacy carriers. Whatever theory you prescribe to the good news is that they have offered a terrific spring airfare sale to boot.

They will double their service to Kauai and in fact will offer daily service to all four major Hawaiian islands from both San Jose and Oakland.

The fare is $179 each way including tax. You need to purchase by March 15, booking at Alaska Airlines Travel dates are April 23, 2012 through may 16, 2012. This is for Monday thhrough Friday travel only.

Bob and Linda approached me as they were wiping splotches of ferrous red Kokee mud from the fender of their blue Jeep. “Don’t want to get stuck with an additional cleaning fee from Hertz”, he sheepishly grinned. They had stayed 2 weeks with us in our Kauai vacation rental and it was sad for me to be saying Aloha. Finishing up he smiled cunningly and asked, “We have two hours before we depart, “What is the best thing to do on Kauai?”

Knowing they had hiked all over the island I replied, “Why not take a walk into Kauai’s agricultural past?” The advantages are the proximity to Turtle Cove Suites and an opportunity to learn how the ancient Hawaiians sustained themselves in the semi arid conditions of Poipu.

Ancient Hawaiian Agricultural Complex

Turn on to Kiahuna Plantation Drive from Poipu Road and turn into the road that leads to the Kiahuna Golf Club. Park at the golf club and you will see the signs indicating Preserve #1. This approximately 3.5 acre was recently opened, and while funding is limited, there are signs posted indicating the sometimes disappearing path into this ancient agricultural complex.

Overview of Preserve 1 of the Koloa Fields

The Koloa Field System comprised over 1000 acres that encompasses what is now called Poipu and south Koloa. Its moon like landscape strewn with lichen covered lava rock seems almost inhospitable today by current farming standards. Gone are the deep soiled verdant pastures that lie only a mile away, replaced by a shallow well drained soil that black pock marked rocks inhabit only inches underfoot.

The navigational skills of the Hawaiians is legendary and well documented. However their farming skills are only recently being lauded by present day archeologists and forensic agriculturalists. Employing environmental observations, an understanding of local crop characteristics, along with religious traditions in the guidance of their planting and harvesting they lived in harmony with less than fecund fields.

Diagram of Irrigation Patterns in the Koloa Fields

The time honored key to ancient Hawaiian sustainability in this semi arid tropical environment was respect for the aina or land, and regard for the natural components that make farming possible, such as the plant and water. The Hawaiians ingeniously diverted water from the start of the Waikomo Stream which lies west of the Koloa Fields. They created their ‘auwai or irrigation ditches from natural contours created by lava flows to convey water to fields by branching off the main ditch to individual areas.

Carefully follow the wood chip path from the entrance bearing left or east, and stop at the enclosures with rock mounds. These mounds in sections that would have been flooded are called lo’i. They were developed to promote above ground growth away from the irrigated soil. These areas were probably used to grow sweet potato where the climbing vines could avoid rot while supporting massive starchy tubers that were prized by ancient Hawaiians.

Water runoff was collected to irrigate down slope where the open fields were used for crops such as dry land taro. At the very bottom of the fields were the walled livestock pens that probably housed pigs. In the center of the preserve you will find several rock bases that researchers believed were foundations for housing. Unknown is if the structures there were temporary or permanent.

Keep an eye out for the native Hawaiian nene, they roost amongst the rock walls of the lo’i and they act as if they own the area, and perhaps they do. I believe I found the answer to my question of where do all the nene hang out when they are not laughing at my golf game at the Kiahuna Golf Club.

Preserve 1 can easily be walked in an hour or less the only cautionary advice that I can offer is to be mindful of your footing. Rocks are everywhere and it would be easy to turn an ankle if you are not careful.

With just a small amount of time you can learn about how ancient Hawaiians farmed the lands of Koloa and Poipu and step back into Kauai’s agricultural past, it’s one of the best things to do in Kauai.
