The locals I know cook them all day with green papaya. They are supposedly very tender and tasty when cooked with papaya and also free range! I must say since I now have my own road island reds I have a much greater appreciation for the wild ones! Great article Joe!

I have been asked that question before.
Common knowledge is that the ancient Hawaiian used the crab claw shaped sail and after the discovery and
the availability of cloth moved to the sprit sail. One can vizualise the shape of a heart by joining 2 crab sails
but I see no advantage of using such a type sail on an outrigger canoe.

Aloha Greg,
Thank you for your comment. I suggest that John writes or calls the Polynesian Voyaging Society, here is their link: http://pvs.kcc.hawaii.edu/
I personally have never seen artist renditions of Pacific Islanders from the days of first contact depicting heart shaped sails on their sailing vessels. I would defer to the experts at the University of Hawaii. Once again thank you for your input.

Hi Joe,

Although most of the sails made were triangular this doesn't answer John's specific question of a 'heart shaped sail"

Aloha John, thank you for the email. Most of the ancient Pacific islander sails are triangular shaped, here is the link: http://www.pbs.org/wayfinders/polynesian8.html

Hope this helps.
