Koloa Rum Celebrates its Fourth Anniversary

Drinking rum is must thing to do on Kauai

What would a tropical island like Kauai be without rum? Images of English and American whaler ships entering tiny Keawaloa Bay only steps from our Ocean Suite dance merrily in my head. Native girls and guys swimming out to greet the ship laden with their bounty. Fast forward to 2013 as I sit on the lanai with a cold glass swirling with color and Kauai's finest libation, Koloa Rum, the signature drink of the Garden Isle. Watching the Kukuiula Canoe Club stroke past the house, all six paddlers pulling in unison. Effortlessly. Everyone is welcome to the three day event held on the grounds of Kilohana … [Read more...]

Best Restaurants in Kauai | Where To Eat In Poipu

Tapa's Bar and Grill in Poipu

Produce a list of the best restaurants in Kauai and it will be received with skepticism by local residents who will defend their favorites with the aplomb of a preacher. Not surprisingly, where to eat in Poipu is a question most often asked by guests at our Kauai vacation rentals. I respond with, do you want something simple? Do you like fish? Or, is an ocean view important? This produces a blank stare and I soon realize I've asked too many questions to someone who has just arrived following a 6 hour flight. We completely understand the fuzziness and to help you decide where to eat in Poipu, here is our list of the … [Read more...]

Warning! This post will not suggest that you visit a specific beach while exploring the island. Nope, sorry, please accept my apologies right now. local restaurants on wheels on kauai photo by joe sylvester

Cruising around Kauai Hawaii, you will no doubt come across some unusual restaurants that are known locally as Hawaiian lunch wagons. Mini eateries that serve delicious meals from hot and savory Thai food creations to Mexican burritos. The food is as varied as the locales their cuisine originate from, but one thing remains constant. These restaurants are on wheels, and at the end of the day they pack up and head home. These uniquely Hawaiian restaurants date back to the sugar era when the kitchen came to the worker. Plantation factory workers would line up at the start of their 30 minute lunch break and purchase … [Read more...]

Kauai Dining | Papalani Gelato

Papalani Gelato is what to do in kauai

It has been my idea that writing on everything Kauai Hawaii would offer our readers a guide, albeit from my perspective, about our island, and hopefully assist them in making intelligent choices to find the best things to do in Kauai. One of the highlights of this 'task' is to detail local eateries close to our Kauai vacation rentals. It's one of the best jobs in the world, and my wife, who is quite supportive, is ready to eat as long as someone else will prepare. I tend to seek out places that are family businesses, I see the owners laying it on the front line everyday. Starting with an idea, nurturing it as it … [Read more...]

Kauai Dining | Tortilla Republic Best Mexican Restaurant

A Kauai restaurant with great Mexican food

Kauai dining has just gotten a bit brighter lately with the addition of another great restaurant in Poipu Beach. Tortilla Republic Grill and Margarita Bar, has opened its doors with little fanfare as just the ground floor casual dining section has opened. The venue for the only Mexican restaurant in Poipu is the new Kukuiula Village which continues to attract some of the best restaurants in Kauai. Good things come to those who wait..., as the quote begins, and has held its truth ever since President Lincoln wrote the words over one hundred years ago. Tortilla Republic was expected to open months earlier but … [Read more...]

Hawaiian Luau Kauai Style

Some Of The Cast Of Luau Kalamaku

There are so many great things to do in Kauai that it can overwhelm the senses. I tend to ease into the tropical scene slowly but deliberately, shedding clothes that I had to wear on the mainland whether due to climatic conditions or social. Throw on the trunks and jump into the pool, swim a few laps to loosen muscles that were bound by that sport jacket I was wearing for the past three days. Wondering why it was so named since it is neither sporty nor a jacket, it does little to keep out the cold and you certainly can't play frisbee in it. This return home to Kauai was different, I brought back a handful of … [Read more...]
